Devon yawned. It was such a beautiful day. The clouds were fluffy and white, the sky was clear and blue...
No, that's not right. The sky isn't clear, it has clouds in it. Devon thought to himself, making the necessary mental correction.
It was such a beautiful day. The clouds were fluffy and white, the sky was blue and nearly cloudless.
That's better, he thought, letting loose another lazy yawn. Today would be the perfect day to go swimming. The basketball court was probably drowning in people by this time. The beach would be lovely today, the sand sparkling in the sun. That was why Devon was spending his day sleeping in the courtyard. What a perfect day to do nothing at all.

Rose glanced at a boy who was lying down just looking at the sky, well at least he didn't look to bored. She herself was happy to have finished all her work in the library and even all of her homework. She just wished that she had another paper to write because she just needed something to do with herself.
Well she might as well try to pass the time.
Well she couldn't remember what his name was but she was sure that he was in the Hawk Army just like she was but she couldn't remember much about him. She put her book bag down next to him and sat down leaning against it. "Your in the hawk army right?" she asked quietly as she never really was one to speak up much.

Devon heard a voice beside him, asking him questions. He stared ahead numbly, arms spread out wide as if he was making a snow angel, except for the fact that he was completely motionless. He blinked and sat up, rubbing his eyes. The voice belonged to a girl - come to think of it, it would have been quite creepy if it hadn't - who was carrying a noticeably large book bag.
"Yeah, have we met before?" Devon asked, eyes still adjusting from the good rubbing that he had given them with his fists. She looked vaguely familiar. If she was, he didn't remember her name. He never really was good with names. People seemed to take it to offense, but he didn't really care.

Rose shrugged her mousy hair moving with the slight offshore breeze. "Probably had a class together, or something." she said with a shrug her soft voice was what she was really listening to but she was sure that she should have known this boy from somewhere else other than just from class.
Oh well, he might have checked out a book while she was helping out in class or something. "I'm Rose." she said finally glancing up at a cloud that looked a lot like a butterfly. [/blockquote]

Devon nodded, remaining silent for what felt like a long time. His attention was fixated on a certain cloud that strikingly resembled a butterfly. It started to drift away, and he blinked. Devon stretched, groaning at the tightness of his arms. Stretching always felt good, in a peculiar way.
"Devon," he replied, in a simple one-word response. At least it suited his needs just fine. Sometimes less words were better. Devon never really liked long-winded responses, neither giving them or listening to them. They were too boring, to time-consuming, rarely thought-provoking anyways. A short answer, that was much better. Any numbskull could deliver a long, dull speech and take an hour and a half to do it. It took a real genius to make the same point in three minutes.

Rose nodded thoughtfully, well he was a boy who looked like he had been sitting there for hours. Well she got all that she had given, so what did she know about him so far, he liked looking at the clouds and his name was Devon... it still wasn't ringing a bell sadly.
"Well at least it's a nice day," the weather, did she really just bring up the weather. This was Southern California it was always sunny, end of story.
"Sorry I must sound like an idiot." she muttered quietly hoping that he didn't hear what she had said in the first place, but if he did then why apologize for something that she was hopping he didn't hear... she really needed to work on her social skills...

Devon wasn't sure what she was talking about. Oh, well, at least he could go to bed that night knowing that he did something other than sleep the whole day, as tempting as that sounded. Hmm... maybe if he did just fall asleep the girl would still be there when he woke up... he was so tired. No, that was rude, and what kind of desperate girl would just wait around while he slept?
Whoever they are, they sound like the perfect girl for me, Devon thought.
"Hmm," he muttered, barely replying to her previous comment. He didn't make much of it, and didn't really have much of a response to it. Besides, he barely knew her at all, what was he supposed to say? Other people could do it. Oh, well, he wasn't 'other people,' and he really didn't have any social skills to write home about. He could hold his own in a conversation when he wanted to, but... he never really found them to be that interesting.
"I need a second opinion," Devon stated, contemplating. He laid back down, his hands behind his head. "Is it just me, or does that cloud look like a butterfly?"

Rose glanced at him shocked for a moment as he had just said the exact thing she was thinking, "Yeah it does." she said thoughtfully as she glanced around the sky at the other clouds, "That one looks like a hammock doesn't it." she said with a thoughtful smile,
It had been a while since she had been cloud watching. It must have been around kindergarten... or even before that, as she was often working on homework and avoiding most other people.

Devon thought about this for a moment. A hammock... he searched for the cloud that she must have been talking about and found it after a while. He stretched his legs out and exhaled, content. The sun was just the perfect temperature on his skin.
"Or a banana," he noted thoughtfully. "Why don't you lay back? It's so much better down here. Then you don't have to crane your neck to look up... it's much easier."
Devon looked up at her out of the corner of his eye. She looked timid. Definitely not the bold, outgoing type. That was good... those people drove him crazy. They spend all of their time talking and never thinking about what they were saying, all of their time going but never giving so much as a thought to where. They needed to slow down. They needed to just sit back, and pick out butterflies in the clouds.

Rose glanced over at him thoughtfully and leaned back slowly so their faces were close together. That way she wouldn't have to raise her voice to make sure he could hear her as she never liked to speak very loud anyway. It was one of those things that she never understood about the people who never stopped talking even though they couldn't even remember what they had said five minutes ago.
It baffled her. "It does look like a banana now that you mentioned it." she said glancing at one that looked like a dove in flight, "and that one looks like a dove, right underneath the banana." she directed him. [/blockquote]

Devon looked over at her. Why was she sitting so close? He shouldn't think too much of it, people who over-thought everything only made themselves miserable. Besides, they were usually wrong. She definitely was a quiet one though, wasn't she? In the short conversation that they had, he wasn't sure that he had correctly heard half of the things that the girl had said. A dove in flight? A glove in fight? A dug in blight? Probably safe to go with dove in flight; it made the most sense.
"It does," Devon agreed and added, jokingly, "I wonder what he's doing with the banana?"

((doing with a banana lol) Rose giggled quietly at the thought of a dove flying away with a banana that was twice it's size, she could almost picture the not so rhythmical flight pattern of the bird as it tried to fly with said yellow fruit. Next thing she thought of was the dove rolling on the ground with a comical look on it's face.
"Maybe she's hungry." she said giving the dove a female gender without thinking twice about it.

Devon nodded thoughtfully, still resting his head on his hands. He was starting to get hungry... but he really didn't want to move. Cloud watching and a casual conversation, that was enough activity for him for one day.
"So," he asked casually. "How long have you been at this school?"
It was a lazy question, but to him, it was good enough. He didn't ask many questions often; he didn't really care most of the time.

Rose glanced over at Devon for a moment, she hadn't thought he'd ask any questions about her. "It's my second year here," she said and thought about all of the teachers who would swear it was her first week here because she never did anything to stand out from the crowd.
"What about you?" she asked her voice finally gaining some volume. [/color]

For the first time, Devon actually felt like he had heard something that she said. He turned over to look at her, deciding that it would be better if he just sat up. Propping himself up on his elbow, he turned onto his side.
"Same as you," he said, puzzled. They had been at the school together for a full year, almost two, and had never met each other before? It was a pretty big school, but there weren't many students even if they were split up into six dorms.
"I'm a junior," he added.

Rose glanced over at him thoughtfully, one -almost two- full years at the same school, even in the same dorm and they had never gotten the chance to talk to one another, "Me too," she said her head turned up to where he had moved to.
She pushed herself up using her backpack as a backrest so she wouldn't have to hold herself up.
It was hard to believe that they had never met before, not even in passing. They had seriously never met before.
Strange. She began to twirl her hair between her fingers thoughtfully. "It's odd that we've never met before." she mused.

Devon stared at the girl for a few seconds. Did she already tell him her name? Oh, no, had he forgotten already? He searched his memory, but the name eluded him skillfully. He frowned and looked up, contemplating.
"Yeah... it's weird," He mused, scratching his head. "Umm, I'm not very good with names, what was your's again?"

((omg you threw me for a sec I actually had to go back and check if they did know each other's names....)) She blinked for a moment, they had been talking for the last few minutes and she couldn't remember if she had introduced herself yet. She ran a hand through her hair as she thought back to the beginning of their conversation. "I honestly can't remember, but I'm Rose." she said and tried to remember his name.
Did he say it, she was sure it was Devon.... Hopefully she wasn't going insane... although she didn't have to many friends to actually measure that for her... "Your Devon right?" she asked confused for a moment. [/color]

Devon nodded and put a hand over his eyes to shade them. The sun was glaring right at his face, and there were no trees to protect from the noonday heat. So, she knew his name. That put him in a bad spot... that meant that he really had already forgotten hers. It had only been a few minutes, how had he let that slip so easily? Maybe he needed more practice. Maybe he just needed to care more in general.
"Yeah... you got it right," he confirmed. "Sorry, I'll try to remember that this time. I might have already mentioned, I'm terrible with names. Always have been."
He made a mental note, trying to force himself not to let this one slip. He had a feeling that they would be running into each other a lot more in the future, being in the same dorm and all. Besides, there was no way she would let him get away with forgetting her name a second time. At least, most people would be insulted. He was just assuming.
"I'll think of something to help me remember. Rose... Rose... like the flower!" He said, smiling.

Rose smiled happily as she realized she had gotten his name right, with all the books and plots bouncing around in her head it was sometimes hard to remember where the books stopped and she started.
She didn't really mind that Devon forgot her name, it was just kind of nice to be noticed for once, usually she was just thought of as the weird book girl, or more commonly not even noticed at all. She didn't blame anyone though, she never did try to stand out much.
"Yes a rose is a flower." she teased him softly, but that was normal as everything she said was soft. Her name was often very frustrating as her relatives, well the ones that remembered she existed, often got her gifts that had to do with roses as they really had no idea what she would really like. Her dorm room looked like a rose garden as she had no roommate and with all the rose decorated gifts it became a bit of a common theme. "I'm bad with names too." [/blockquote]
